New 'Legends of Tomorrow' Trailer: Does Chronos Have a History with the Team?

Who’s the “new and very huge problem” that faces the Legends of Tomorrow in The CW’s most recent trailer? As if Vandal Savage isn’t enough, now there’s someone with a big gun, a metal face, and vaguely Boba Fett-ish vibe.

His name is Chronos, a longtime Atom villain that some fans have been hoping to see. Introduced in 1962 as just a common thief with a well-developed internal clock (remember the singing gimmick from Hudson Hawk? Yeah, that bad), he eventually developed technology that allowed him to time travel.

After that, he became an increasing menace, running afoul of the Justice League, the Teen Titans and countless more heroes. At one point, he managed to befriend the Atom under a false identity in order to destroy his life — shades of Harrison Wells/Eobard Thawne from The Flash.

Chronos even fought Booster Gold — notable because he’s the father of Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) — and even though there’s been no mention of his name yet, he remains one of the most highly anticipated characters comic fans are waiting for. As of now, however, it doesn’t look like they will be using any of that story. In Legends continuity, Chronos is just a bounty hunter from the future that crosses paths with the team; he doesn’t appear to have any further connection or history with them. Of course, it took three seasons for Laurel Lance to become Black Canary, so maybe there’s more to this faceless villain than we realize?

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow premieres Thursday, January 21 at 8 p.m., one night after the Arrow’s return, on The CW.
