'Last Week Tonight' Explains The 'Brexit,' Cause We Know You’ve Wanted To Ask

John Oliver and the Last Week Tonight team addressed Britain’s upcoming referendum over the country’s membership in the European Union. Nicknamed “the Brexit,” voters will decide on June 23 whether Britain will remain in the EU. “Britain has always had an arm’s-length relationship with the EU,” Oliver explained. “For instance, it doesn’t use the euro, and some British politicians have been openly hostile, right to the face of EU officials.”

Leaders of the UK Independence Party are the leading proponents for Brexit. And their qualms with the EU echo issues we’re experiencing stateside with immigration. “UKIP argues that a Brexit would enable the U.K. to significantly reduce immigration,” Oliver said, “preventing both EU citizens from taking British jobs and non-EU citizens from sneaking in to commit terror attacks.”

In addition to the nationalist undertones, the exit could have a massive economic impact. But nothing gets the point across better than a child singer backed by a barbershop quartet, which Oliver used to close the segment.
