Kids Learn Tough Life Lessons on ‘SYTYCD’

The auditions are over on So You Think You Can Dance, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less stressful for the remaining dancers. This week was the beginning of the “academy,” where the kids were selected by SYTYCD all-stars. The 10 all-stars each selected five dancers, and those kids then learned a routine that showcased different dancing styles. After all the kids performed the routine, the all-stars then began whittling their teams down to just one contestant to take to the live shows.

Some of the kids had a hard time grasping the different dancing styles, which led to some very talented dancers not performing well and being let go. It was a tough life lesson for a bunch of kids, and some of them handled the lesson better than others.

After forgetting part of his routine, one 10-year-old boy said, “Just because you mess up one time doesn’t mean anything.” Unfortunately, that lesson was a little tougher to learn for hip-hop dancer Jaryan, who gave up at the end of his performance. After some words of encouragement, Jaryan’s all-star, Fik-shun, let him go. It was a tough pill to swallow for the 12-year-old, but with this failure, Jaryan learned something much more important than winning a dance competition: Believe in yourself and other people will believe in you too.

So You Think You Can Dance airs Monday at 8 p.m. on Fox.
