To Keep Record, Ellen Cuts Deal With Wendy’s Chicken Nugget Retweet Rival

On Ellen on Tuesday, Ellen DeGeneres came face-to-face with her Twitterverse nemesis, nugget boy Carter Wilkerson. The two are in a heated battle for the retweet record, which DeGeneres has held since 2014 with her celebrity-filled selfie from the Oscars. On April 5, Wilkerson tweeted Wendy’s asking how many retweets would be necessary to get him a year of free chicken nuggets. Wendy’s replied saying he needed 18 million. This would dwarf the record held by DeGeneres, which was just over 3 million at the time.

There’s been some back-and-forth, with DeGeneres talking about the competition twice on her show last week, even bringing in Bradley Cooper, who took the Oscars selfie, to do a PSA. Wendy’s has jumped onboard the nugget boy train, issuing a chicken nugget emoji and pledging to donate $100,000 to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption if Wilkerson can beat DeGeneres’s record. Easily worth it given the amount of free publicity the fast food chain has gotten from this.

But DeGeneres is determined to hold on to the record. She gave Wilkerson a 55-inch TV and a year’s supply of Ellen underwear as incentive to tell anyone who retweets his to retweet hers as well, keeping her in the lead. Wilkerson is fine with the arrangement. He doesn’t mind being second in all-time retweets. He just wants to reach 18 million and get his nuggets.
