David Letterman Says an Emotional Goodbye to Animal Expert 'Jungle' Jack Hanna

David Letterman’s farewell tour continues as his final Late Show on May 20 draws closer and closer. Wednesday night, he said his goodbyes to “Jungle” Jack Hanna, who has been the host’s go-to animal expert since Letterman’s Late Night days on NBC in the mid-‘80s. And as a going-away present, the Late Show staff assembled a highlight reel of Hanna’s many, critter-packed appearances on both shows. The segments include a butt-sniffing monkey, who took a little too much interest in a dog’s posterior, a hungry Komodo dragon, a jumpy lemur, and a pair of ostriches. Almost as funny as the creatures themselves are Letterman’s reactions to them, which range from outright horror to bemused curiosity. Hanna himself was visibly moved by his walk down memory lane, wiping away tears as he embraced the host one final time. Now that he’s retiring, maybe Letterman can accompany his pal on a real safari.

The Late Show With David Letterman series finale airs May 20 at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
