‘Julie’s Greenroom’: Julie Andrews Previews Her Star-Packed New Kids Series
As if the tutelage of near EGOT winner Julie Andrews (she’s only missing a Tony) isn’t enough, young viewers of the Andrews-hosted new Netflix puppet series Julie’s Greenroom are getting a whole slew of celebs to help them learn to appreciate the performing arts.
Carol Burnett, Alec Baldwin, Sara Bareilles, Josh Groban, David Hyde Pierce, Chris Colfer, Ellie Kemper, and Tituss Burgess are among the famous names who will pop up during the show’s 13-episode first season, all to help “Ms. Julie” and the “Greenies” puppets school preschoolers on fun topics like music, acting, dance, and improv.
“I hope that we’ll bring the pleasure of the creative arts to the children at a very early age, because they are so important,” Andrews, who also co-created the series with her daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton, Judy Rothman-Rofė, and Lisa Henson, daughter of Muppets creator Jim Henson, says in the video above.
Adds Hamilton, “We know that there is no better way for kids to learn critical thinking skills and communications skills … and tolerance and empathy … we’re not even necessarily saying performing on stage. It can be backstage, it can be in the audience. It’s just being exposed to the arts and all they have to offer.”
The puppets featured on the show were created by the Henson company, and several of the puppeteers are original cast members from Avenue Q. They join Ms. Julie in the season finale to put on a special show — using all the arts skills they’ve learned along the way — they hope will encourage rich benefactor Edna Brightful (Burnett) to share some of her wealth and fund the theater where they perform.
“It’s a lovely array of friends and talent,” Andrews promises.
Julie’s Greenroom premieres March 17 on Netflix.
