Jon Stewart Discusses Presidential Election
Jon Stewart was on CBS This Morning, and as you might have guessed, he was asked about the election of Donald Trump as the next president of the United States. Stewart told host Charlie Rose that he didn’t think the country was “fundamentally different” than it was two weeks ago. The former Daily Show host also suggested that President-elect Trump is a repudiation of this country’s two major political parties.
“They’re not draining the swamp,” Stewart said, responding to the Trump campaign’s oft-used slogan “Drain the swamp.” “McConnell and Ryan, those guys are the swamp. And what they decided to do was, ‘I’m gonna make sure government doesn’t work, and then I’m going to use its lack of working as evidence of it.’ Donald Trump is a reaction not just to Democrats but to Republicans.”
Stewart also disagreed with the notion held by some that Trump voters are, because of their vote, racist. “There’s now this idea that anyone who voted for him has to be defined by the worst of his rhetoric,” he said. “In the liberal community, you hate this idea of creating people as a monolith. Don’t look at Muslims as a monolith. They are the individuals, and it would be ignorance. But everybody who voted for Trump is a monolith, is a racist. That hypocrisy is also real.”
Finally, Stewart offered that this is simply yet another part of the nation’s journey to figure out what kind of United States it is going to be. “America is not natural,” he said. “Natural is tribal. We’re fighting against thousands of years of human history to create something that no one’s ever done — that’s what’s exceptional about America. This ain’t easy. It’s an incredible thing.”
