‘Game Of Thrones’: How a Jon Snow Impression Landed a Comedian a Cameo on the Show

When it comes to Game of Thrones, many deaths come in moments of great valor. Some come way of betrayal. And, of course, there are those are just kind of embarrassing. That would be what applies to Canadian comedian Steve Love. We’d explain how his short-lived character was dispatched, but the man himself has a fairly succinct way of putting it. “Everybody’s always like, ‘What did you do on the show?'” Love told Yahoo TV. “I’m like, ‘Well, I got a finger up my butt and I got my head cut off.'”

While at the first-ever “Con of Thrones,” a Game of Thrones convention held in Nashville, Love spoke with Yahoo TV about how he went from doing impressions of characters like Jon Snow, Jorah Mormont, and Robert Baratheon in his room to meeting his end by way of Sandor Clegane.

“I’ve always done impressions, and it’s always been a party trick,” Love said. “And then somebody I went to school with was like, ‘Hey man, you should put those on YouTube, you’ll make some money at it. I’m like, ‘Cha-ching!’ I started making YouTube videos. I did a Family Guy video, and then I did The Wire, and then I was like, ‘OK, I’ll do Game of Thrones because I like that show.'”

It wasn’t long before Love’s efforts got noticed. Late-night host and avid Game of Thrones fan Jimmy Kimmel saw Love’s videos and tweeted one out in 2012:

“It was the biggest hit I’d had by far,” Love said about the video Kimmel tweeted. But that wouldn’t be the end of Kimmel’s appreciation of Love’s talents. “A guy from [Kimmel’s] team asked if I wanted to be on the show. It was like, ‘We’re going to have someone from Game of Thrones on Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy wants to impression guys to do impressions for the guy.'”

In 2015, Love appeared via satellite on Kimmel, and he did his Jon Snow for none other than Jon Snow himself.

“I got to do more impressions than the other guys,” Love reminisced. “After the Kimmel thing, I guess that’s when [Game of Thrones producers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff] saw it, and they had seen my videos before and I guess, they were just like, ‘Hey, it’s that guy! Let’s put him on the show.'”

Love wound up playing a character whose time was short and mostly filled with lows. Sharing a scene with some rogue members of the Brotherhood Without Banners, his character winds up being the subject of the ol’ finger-up-your-butt prank only to get killed by Clegane moments later.

Love told us he appreciated the role and thought it was a great way for him to be on the show. He also got treated to dinner after his gruesome end by the man who “cut” him out of the show. “Rory McCann, who plays the Hound, took us all out for dinner and was like, ‘I feel bad for killing you guys. I’ll buy you dinner,'” Love said.
