John Oliver’s Plan to Ruin Trump’s Name
On Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, John Oliver took a swing at Donald Trump. Much of the 21-minute segment was centered on debunking Trump’s image of a strong, principled, and successful businessman. He said, “Donald Trump can seem appealing until you take a closer look, much like the lunch buffet at a strip club, the NFL, or having a pet chimpanzee. Sure it seems fun, but some day Coco’s going to tear your f***ing limbs off.”
After tearing apart the image Trump has worked hard to portray, John admitted that the word “Trump” does sound rich. He said, “It’s the sound produced when a mouthy servant is slapped in the face with a wad of thousand-dollar bills: Trump.”
In order to break the correlation between Trump and wealth, John suggested using his family’s original name “Drumpf.” John went on, “Stop and take a moment to imagine how you would feel if you just met a guy named Donald Drumpf, a litigious serial liar with a string of broken business ventures and the support of a former Klan leader who he can’t decide whether or not to condemn.”
To support his movement, John created a website, hashtag, and even hats that say “Make Donald Drumpf Again.”
Last Week Tonight airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on HBO.
