John Oliver rips Academy for kicking out Weinstein but not Cosby, Polanski, or Gibson

On Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, the host called out the Motion Picture Academy for the hypocritical act of kicking out Harvey Weinstein but not booting some other very famous members who have also been also been accused of sexual harassment and assault. The Academy’s board of governors voted overwhelmingly to expel the once powerful and feared producer Weinstein, saying, “The era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and harassment in our industry is over.” Oliver had something to say about that. “Yes, finally. The group that counts among its current members Roman Polanski, Bill Cosby, and Mel Gibson has found the one guy who treated women badly and kicked him out. So, congratulations, Hollywood! See you at the next Oscars, where, and this is true, Casey Affleck will be presenting Best Actress.”

The Academy wasn’t the only one under Oliver’s fire. Longtime friend of Weinstein the designer Donna Karan quickly came to Weinstein’s defense with words she would later regret. “How do we display ourselves? How do we present ourselves as women? What are we asking? Are we asking for it?” she said. And for Oliver, it seemed that her perspective wasn’t the only thing that was dated. “How would Donna Karan know how women are dressing right now? It’s not 1993,” he said.

As more stories of Harvey’s sexual misconduct come to light, there is a disappointing theme of silence. Actress Angie Everhart’s story was no different. She immediately told people that Weinstein entered her hotel room and masturbated in front of her, but the reaction from others was complicit. “Everyone was like, ‘Oh that’s just Harvey,'” she said. Oliver found this appalling. “So everyone knew, and they just went with it? ‘Yeah, Harvey’s gonna burst into your room and masturbate. That’s just Harvey.’ He’s like a sex-criminal version of the Kool-Aid man.”

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver airs Sundays at 11 p.m. on HBO.
