John Oliver Vows to Drink a Bud Light Lime if it Means Saving Soccer

John Oliver took a few extra penalty shots at soccer’s governing body, FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), on Sunday night’s episode of Last Week Tonight. It was a sequel of sorts to a segment that aired last June in which the British host and soccer (or, as it’s known in every other country, football) fan first tore into the group, which he called “a comically grotesque organization.” Someone in the U.S. Justice Department must have been watching that episode, because last week, corruption charges were brought against 14 different FIFA officials.

Oliver gleefully enjoyed a victory lap in the wake of the news, saying of his adopted home, “It took the country that cares the least about football to bring down the people who have been ruining it.” Despite the good news, the host still found plenty to criticize about FIFA, specifically the way it rubber-stamped the re-election of its president, Sepp Blatter. So Oliver spoke directly to the people who could most directly impact the organization’s future: the promotional sponsors. “Please make Sepp Blatter go way,” he pleaded, promising Adidas that he’d wear one of their “ugly shoes,” and Budweiser (a brewer he skewered several weeks ago) that he’d personally drink one of the company’s beers, even — gasp! — Bud Light Lime. Ball’s in your court, Bud. Let’s make this happen for the good of soccer… and our late night entertainment.
