John Oliver Gets Cicadas Up to Speed on the Last 17 Years

In a web exclusive, John Oliver created a special segment for cicadas. For the uninitiated, cicadas are the pesky bugs that show up about every 17 years and are most common in the eastern United States. They’re set to return this summer, and Oliver got them up to speed on what’s been going on in the world. He started with politics. “We voted in a second President Bush by a narrow margin, and rejected a third President Bush by an enormous margin,” Oliver explained before going into technology, “We made a lot of strides since 1999. For example, the Internet no longer screams in agony as you dial into it from your phone line.”

Pop culture has had arguably the biggest shift since the cicadas were last around, as outlined in Oliver’s rundown. “Dr. Dre is now a multimillionaire electronics mogul,” said Oliver. He continued: “This guy [Macklemore] won a Grammy for best rap song, the curly-haired guy from NSync is one of the biggest entertainers in the world, and the lead singer of R&B group Destiny’s Child is essentially our queen now.” So now we eagerly await the arrival of these exciting creatures and, as Oliver points out, hopefully not for the last time. “Enjoy the world while you have the chance because, to be honest, depending on how things go in November, this planet might not be around in another 17 years,” concluded Oliver, “and I do not have time to explain that to you.”

Last Week Tonight airs Sundays at 11 p.m. on HBO.
