Comedian Jim Jefferies Shoots Down Gun Rights Logic

On Monday’s Conan, Australian comedian Jim Jefferies discussed gun control in the United States. A clip of his past standup special Bare is frequently shared after mass shootings. In it, he discusses Australia outlawing guns after a massacre and how the call for gun control has differed in America. With the popular clip spreading across the Internet, he’s received some blowback from gun rights advocates.

Jefferies said of the tragedy in Nice, France, “What happened in Nice is horrible. But the gun nuts, as soon as that happened in Nice, they all wrote to me because I’m the antigun guy. And they go, ‘Well, maybe we need truck control.’ And I’m like, ‘We already have it.’ You gotta get a license. You gotta register the truck. I can’t get a truck. I don’t have a truck license. I can’t drive one.”

He also equated guns, which are described as tools for self-defense, with another dangerous tool. “You can open-carry a machine gun in Target, but you can’t open carry a chainsaw. That would be ridiculous. You can’t walk into Target and say, ‘This is my protection chainsaw. The only way to stop a bad guy with a chainsaw is a good guy with a chainsaw.’”

Conan airs weeknights at 11 p.m. on TBS.
