Jeff Gaspin is on the move.
The former NBC Universal chairman's production and consulting company Gaspin Media company has been acquired by independent studio Primary Wave Entertainment.
With the acquisition, Gaspin will serve in the newly created role of president of Primary Wave. He will also be a member of the management board and begin his new role immediately. In his new position, Gaspin will be charged with leading the expansion of original content across TV and digital platforms. He will oversee a portfolio of scripted and scripted fare as well as develop and produce programming across linear and non-linear platforms in addition to pursuing distribution opportunities for multiplatform content including broadcast, mobile and merging technologies.
"Primary Wave is a talent-centered entertainment company where actors, artists, directors, writers and creative minds can do their best work. Jeff is a skilled, innovative leader who will make a powerful impact on our business," said Primary Wave founders and co-CEOs David Guillod and Lawrence Mestel in a statement. "As we continue to build momentum across our television and digital portfolios, it has become more important than ever to establish an effective operating structure for Primary Wave. We will continue to grow our executive ranks with key new hires as we pursue an ambitious expansion of our original content slate."
Gaspin Media was formed in 2012 and has more than a dozen projects on the air and in development including ABC's To Tell the Truth, USA's First Impressions with Dana Carvey and syndicated entry The Preachers. Gaspin will remain an exec producer on those projects moving forward.
"I have had first-hand dealings with Primary Wave's passionate creative executives and I am impressed with their roster of talent and Larry and David's leadership and vision," Gaspin said. "My principal focus will be to build the company's television and digital assets, which includes delivering world-class content to platforms across the globe. Since content, both traditional and digital, is in such high demand all over the world, I can't think of a more exciting way to spend the next phase of my career."
Gaspin joins Primary Wave as the world for independent studios remains an uphill battle in the era of vertically integrated networks who lean on their studio counterparts as ownership becomes increasingly valuable to the overall bottom line. Gaspin most recently launched online video platform TAPP in 2014 as the content generator looked to build originals around talent brands. Before that, during his tenure at NBCU, Gaspin oversaw NBC Entertainment, Telmundo and cable networks USA Network, Syfy and Oxygen. At NBC, his credits included acquiring The Voice and developing series including Grimm as he spearheaded NBCU's growth into online video including early deals with Netflix. He also played a central role in the formation of Hulu.
Primary Wave is also a global talent management company (with clients including Mayim Bialik, Cat Cora, Mike Epps, Gina Rodriguez and Gabrielle Union), production and music publishing, licensing and live entertainment and brand marketing company. Music clients include Cee Lo Green, Melissa Etheridge, Alanis Morissette and Plain White T's. On the publishing side, the company acquired songs from artists including Kurt Cobain, John Lennon and others. Primary Wave's latest TV deal was a straight-to-series order for Loudermilk, a comedy from Peter Farrelly set up at the AT&T Audience Network.
