Janet Hubert Chats About Janet Hubert’s Feud With Will Smith

Janet Hubert was on The Real and talked about her longtime feud with her television nephew, Will Smith. Janet Hubert played Aunt Viv for three seasons on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air before being replaced. In a radio interview in 1993, Smith suggested Janet Hubert resented that he was the star of their show. “It’s been discussed for 25 years; it’s insane,” she said before switching to the third person. “Janet Hubert was never difficult on that set; Janet Hubert was so professional, it wasn’t even funny.”

“I think Will simply needed to win, and I think sometimes … you get caught up in a lie, and those things never happened,” the actress theorized. “She never left the set. I never left the set. We got along great. I think he was young and he was inexperienced; I think he simply had to win.”

In January, Janet Hubert took on another member of the Smith family, Jada Pinkett. When Jada announced she was boycotting the Oscars because of the lack of diversity, Hubert posted a rant on Facebook. “I find it ironic that somebody who has made their living — made their living — and made millions of millions of dollars from the very people you that talk about boycotting, just because you didn’t get a nomination?” she said in a video she recorded using her laptop. “Just because you didn’t win? That is not the way life works, baby.”

Hubert thinks Jada and Will are only boycotting the award show because Will didn’t get a nomination for his performance in Concussion, which Will denies. Hubert is skeptical nonetheless. “Be specific. And make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons, and not because you’re doing it for the wrong reasons,” she said.
