'Jane the Virgin' Season Premiere Recap: Jane's Baby Got Back

Warning: Spoilers ahead for this week’s Season 2 premiere of Jane the Virgin.

And… exhale. After holding our breath for five long months waiting for a resolution to the heart-stopping cliffhanger in Jane the Virgin’s season finale — will Jane get her snatched newborn baby back? — we’re happy to report that tonight’s Season 2 premiere wasted no time in returning baby Mateo to his mother’s arms and getting back to being the fun, sassy, heartfelt Jane we fell in love with last year.

Let’s dive in and take a closer look at what we liked (and what we didn’t like) about the premiere, and the burning questions it left us pondering.

What We Liked: Muchas gracias to showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman and her writing staff for not dragging out the “where is Mateo?” storyline. We knew Jane’s baby wouldn’t be missing long — the Season 2 ads even show her holding the kid — but child abduction is kind of a heavy topic for a lighthearted rom-com like Jane, so we’re glad it got neatly resolved in the first 15 minutes of the premiere.

And they handled the tragic subject matter with Jane’s typical optimism and humor; as Alba assured young Jane in a flashback, “That’s the best part of telenovelas. You know they’ll live happily ever after.” Rose/Sin Rostro was willing to exchange Jane’s baby for a dragonfly brooch of hers that was in police evidence, and Jane bravely hobbled out of her hospital bed — powered by her own telenovela-style theme song — to help Michael and Rafael track down the brooch and get Mateo back. (She might need adult diapers, but she’s not letting that stop her, dammit!)

After retrieving her baby boy, the episode’s main drama centered on Jane’s trouble with getting Mateo to nurse — a relatively minor concern next to kidnapping, sure, but a very real one for new moms. And it gave both the men in Jane’s life a chance to step up: Rafael, to save the day with his suggestion of “cluster feeding,” and Michael, to advise his romantic rival (because he’s a mensch!) to read up on parenting books and offer some help. The Jane-Rafael-Michael love triangle is clearly going strong in Season 2, and we’re still not sure exactly how it’s going to shake out.

We also spent a little time getting to know Rafael’s villainous ex Petra, as she debated whether or not to impregnate herself with Rafael’s frozen sperm. We even felt a smidge of sympathy for her, as we learned that five years ago, she and Rafael were pregnant with their own child. As the Narrator put it, “Wait, why am I rooting for her?” But that’s what Jane the Virgin does best: finding the innate humanity in even the most unlovable characters.

Plus, this freeze-frame of Petra napping just cracked us up:

Meanwhile, Gina Rodriguez continued to make Emmy voters look like idiots for not even nominating her last year. (What were they thinking?) Between the comedy of her climbing out of her hospital bed right after giving birth and the poignant drama of her struggling to get Mateo to nurse, she showed more of the remarkable range and verve that makes her one of TV’s best actresses, regardless of genre (or network).

What We Didn’t Like: In three words? Needs. More. Rogelio. It’s understandable that our favorite scene-stealing soap star had to take a back seat during all the Mateo drama, but we still missed him. He did get a couple of good scenes, though, nuzzling on Michael’s shoulder and dealing with the throngs of virgin-birth fans outside Jane’s house: “Do you want to shut it down, or do a tour of the morning shows and turn this into a book deal?”

Michael’s a nice guy, but we’ve gotta say his police work is questionable at best. His former partner/current Sin Rostro henchman Nadine told him there was a chip in the dragonfly brooch containing all kinds of info on Sin Rostro’s criminal network. Um, Michael, maybe you should have checked for that kind of thing before just handing it over?

We usually enjoy Jane’s whimsical visual style, but Petra’s vision of Rafael popping out of his sperm capsule (ew) may just give us nightmares:

And for a show that thrives on twists, they may have thrown in one twist too many with that final shot of a mystery woman plotting against Jane in a foreign language. Was it Sin Rostro? If not, who the f–k was it? Let’s hope the crime-solving aspects of the show don’t overwhelm the family comedy stuff, because the latter is where Jane really shines.

Our Burning Questions: We know there’ll be not one, but two, weddings this season — will one of them be Jane and Michael? Or Jane and Rafael? (Our money’s on Michael, just because Rafael will be in her life anyway as Mateo’s dad.) Will Petra be pregnant with another little Rafael soon? And really, who the f–k were those people at the end?

Jane the Virgin airs Mondays at 9 p.m. on The CW.
