J.Lo’s New ‘Ain’t Your Mama’ Video Based On ‘Mad Men,’ ‘Network,’ Rosie the Riveter

J. Lo’s new music video for “Ain’t Your Mama” doubles down on the song’s theme of female empowerment by referencing anti-establishment figures in TV, film, and our nation’s history.

J. Lo plays a range of characters that flip the female stereotype on its head – in one case, literally, as her 1950s-era housewife dumps dinner on her husband. In another scene, she gives a nod to Mad Men’s secretary-turned-partner Joan Holloway, complete with a hard-drinking Don Draper type.

Other references include World War II icon Rosie the Riveter and a 1980s boss that evokes Leonardo DiCaprio’s turn in Wolf of Wall Street. J. Lo even tries her hand at playing her version of fed-up news anchor Howard Beale from the movie Network, switching the iconic line from “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore” to, more simply, “I ain’t your mama.”

J. Lo’s video might be sticking it to the patriarchy but the recording of “Ain’t Your Mama” was more controversial. Producer Dr. Luke, who is currently embroiled in a lawsuit with Kesha, who’s accused him of rape, is credited on the song. Unsurprisingly, J. Lo was criticized for working with him.

And while the video extols female independence, it leans heavily on product placement, plugging Beluga brand vodka and an app called Friendable, where presumably, you can become J. Lo’s friend.
