J.Lo, Paris Jackson, A Tribe Called Quest, and More Get Political at Grammys

The 59th Annual Grammy Awards echoed other recent award shows, as several performers and presenters addressed the current political climate in America.

Early in the show, Jennifer Lopez said, “At this particular point in history our voices are needed more than ever. As Toni Morrison said, ‘This is precisely the time artists go to work.'”

Musical performer Busta Rhymes along with A Tribe Called Quest called out President Trump over the Muslim travel ban that is currently being fought in court. Rhymes rapped, “I just want to thank President Agent Orange for perpetuating all of the evil that you’ve been perpetuating through the United States. I want to thank President Agent Orange for your unsuccessful attempt at the Muslim ban.”

Michael Jackson’s daughter, Paris, a presenter, reminded the crowd of the current protests over the Dakota Access Pipeline, saying, “We can really use this kind of excitement at a pipeline protest, guys. Hashtag nodapl.”

Other presenters like actress Laverne Cox and Academy CEO Neil Portnow discussed the importance of music and art and accepting all people.

With the Academy Awards set to air Feb. 26, artists’ unrest with the current political climate is sure to surface again at another star-studded event.
