‘Hell on Wheels’ Final Episodes Preview: ‘Was It Worth It?’

AMC’s Hell on Wheels returns June 11 for the back half of its final season, with seven remaining episodes. The immediate question on fans’ minds is how the midseason cliffhanger will be resolved: The Swede (Christopher Heyerdahl) and Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount) both learned the location of Cullen’s family and rode off in that direction — with The Swede getting the jump. And, of course, there’s the other race to look forward to: which railroad will get to the riches of the Ogden coal fields first — the Central Pacific, with tracks laid by Bohannon for Collis P. Huntington (Tim Guinee), or the Union Pacific, backed by Thomas “Doc” Durant (Colm Meaney)?

The show will be asking even bigger questions as the Transcontinental Railroad nears its completion: “Was it worth it? Nationally, was it worth the cost,” Mount says in the preview above. “And the cost was high.”

And, as producer Tom Brady says, “One of the broader themes we’re dealing with in the last half of the season is the question of whether a country and a man can be redeemed from their sins, and whether asking for forgiveness and seeking redemption is enough to escape that.”

Hell on Wheels returns Saturday, June 11 at 9 p.m. on AMC.
