Two days ahead of its initial timeslot, HBO has released the second episode of “Westworld” on HBO Now, HBO Go and HBO On Demand.
The announcement was made first on the series’ promotional site, DiscoverWestworld.com, and rolled out on its social media platforms. The early release was most likely executed to avoid competition with Sunday night’s second presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.
To attempt to make “Westworld” a hit of “Game of Thrones” proportions, the marketing team has pieced together an in-depth marketing strategy and interactive campaign for the show that includes a VR component. HBO also recently made the first episode of “Westworld’ available for free online — a strategy that it has used in the past for other shows as well.
“Westworld” debuted to a total of 3.3 million viewers last Sunday — HBO’s most successful series premiere since “True Detective” in 2014.
Variety critic Maureen Ryan wrote in her review that the show “runs on predictable tracks, and no matter how luxurious the trappings of the journey, the destination is obvious from miles away.”The sci-fi western stars Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright and James Marsden. Created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, “Westworld” is based on the 1973 film of the same name by Michael Crichton. The series executive produced by J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk and Jerry Weintraub.
