Hats Off to the New ‘Gotham’ Villain

Gotham has expanded its rogues gallery, as the Mad Hatter made his debut on this week’s episode.

The Hatter, whose real name is Jervis Tetch, is a classic villain taken from the pages of the DC comic book. Tetch is a master of hypnotism, using his talents as a club performer to entertain the rich citizens of Gotham but secretly giving them suggestions so he can rob them late at night after his show has ended.

While he’s not the same person as the character from the Alice in Wonderland books, Gotham’s Mad Hatter shares one thing in common: They are both infatuated with a girl called Alice. Tetch’s Alice happens to be his sister, who was one of the special inmates at Indian Hill. And Alice’s blood has a virus that has a deadly effect if it comes in contact with other people.

Both siblings, while still separated, are bound to cause a lot of trouble this season on Gotham.

Gotham airs Mondays at 8 p.m./7 p.m. on Fox.
