‘The Handmaid's Tale’: Joseph Fiennes Joins Hulu Adaptation as Male Lead

Joseph Fiennes‘ latest role was handmaid for him.

The American Horror Story actor has been cast opposite Mad Men‘s Elisabeth Moss in Hulu’s 10-episode adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale, TVLine has learned. He will play the pivotal role of Commander Fred Waterford.

A founding father of the totalitarian society known as Gilead and a powerful, high-ranking official, Commander Waterford rules the household where Offred (Moss) is a Handmaid. (In the 1990 film adaptation, Robert Duvall played The Commander opposite Natasha Richardson’s Offred.)

The cast also includes Max Minghella (The Mindy Project), Ann Dowd (The Leftovers), Samira Wiley (Orange is the New Black) and Madeline Brewer (Hemlock Grove).

Based on Margaret Atwood’s celebrated 1985 novel, Hulu’s Tale starts shooting this fall in Toronto ahead of a 2017 launch date. Reed Morano (Vinyl, Looking) will direct the first three episodes.
