‘Hamilton’ Star Sings About Puerto Rico’s Plight on ‘Last Week Tonight With John Oliver’

Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator and star of the hit Broadway musical Hamilton, stopped by Last Week Tonight With John Oliver to sing a song about Puerto Rico’s economic plight. The unincorporated U.S. territory is currently $70 billion in debt, mired in a 10-year-long economic and political crisis.

Analysts believe the debt is unpayable, and various American credit rating agencies have already downgraded Puerto Rico’s debt to noninvestment grade.

The problem hits close to home for Miranda, who has Puerto Rican parents. The composer, lyricist, rapper, and actor decided to use his many talents to bring attention to the issue. He and John Oliver urged congress to assist Puerto Rico, which is now facing severe education and healthcare cuts. One hospital even had their power shut off, due to an inability to pay their bills.

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver airs Sundays at 11 p.m. on HBO.
