Meet the Voice Behind Sterling Archer and Bob Belcher

If suave superspy Sterling Archer sounds an awful lot like, well, less suave burger flipper Bob Belcher, you’re not imagining things — both animated fellas are voiced by Emmy nominee H. Jon Benjamin, who says he shares some traits in common with both characters. “I have Archer’s arrogance, but I’m a dad in real life, so that part of me is more like Bob,” says Benjamin, who also talks about Archer producers ditching the ISIS name for show’s spy agency, and says he also hopes the series will, at some point, delve back into the storyline about Archer’s father.

Benjamin’s spy guy — who became a daddy at the end of Season 5 (aka Archer Vice) — kicks off the series’ two-part Season 6 finale this week. “Drastic Voyage: Part I and II” finds Sterling, Lana, Mama Archer, and the rest of their formerly-known-as-ISIS cohorts tripping off on their “most fantastic voyage ever.” As per the movie it’s spoofing — Fantastic Voyage — there will be miniaturization afoot, along with fantastic guest stars. Portlandia’s Carrie Brownstein plays Dr. Sklodowska, who requires the assistance of Archer and company to save her colleague (and lover), Dr. Kovacs.

The finale’s other guest stars: Christian Slater, reprising his role as CIA spy Slater, Gary Cole as CIA Agent Hawley, Ron Liebman as Ron Cadillac, and Michael Gray — the star of the 1974-77 kid series Shazam! — playing Michael Gray. Archer is thrilled to meet one of his heroes (who he refers to as “TV’s Michael Gray”), but not so much for Dr. Sklodowska… turns out she and the man who played Billy Batson have a complicated past.

And, thanks to Archer, probably a complicated present, too.

Archer airs Thursday at 10 p.m. on FX and Bob’s Burgers airs Sunday at 7:30 p.m. on Fox.
