New 'Gotham' Season 2 Teasers Show Off Joker, Tigress, Batcave

According to the two just-released Gotham teaser clips, it looks like the Fox drama is taking the old adage “Your hero is only as good as their villain” seriously. Most of the more colorful, non-Mafia baddies have only stuck around for an episode, or are only briefly glimpsed. This season’s tagline, “Rise of the Villains,” suggests Jim Gordon’s dealings with these people will be much more involved.

The first teaser (above), “Hungry” — with a slowed-down version of Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like the Wolf,” naturally — shows off bad guys old and new.

The corrupt Commissioner Loeb (Peter Scolari) may not be a problem much longer. In the comics, Loeb’s mob ties are exposed, forcing him to resign, but when Gordon says, “I told you I’d break you. I will,” it kind of sounds like he might decide to employ a more… persuasive measure (of the leg/face-breaking variety).

One of the reasons we’re thinking Gordon’s methods will get more extreme is that it looks like he’s getting very cozy with the Penguin next season. He already knows that Cobblepot’s help comes at a price; what would drive Gordon to continue seeking that help?

It might be because the main villains early in the season are billionaires Theo Galavan (James Frain, Orphan Black) and his sister Tabitha (Jessica Lucas, Gracepoint) — otherwise known as Tigress.

There are multiple versions of Tigress — the first appeared in the same Action Comics #1 that introduced Superman — but Tabitha Galavan is a completely new take on the supervillain. Presumably her DNA won’t be spliced with a tiger’s, like some of her animated variations, but maybe Gotham is ready to step up its craziness?

Deadline says that the duo’s plan “will lead to the creation of new villains … and the destruction of others.” Maybe there will be DNA splicing? More likely, we’ll see a return of Venom, the prototype drug created by WellZyn in Season 1 and best known in the comics as the substance that created Bane.

The Riddler, having finally come into his own, will play an even bigger role in Season 2.

Victor Zsasz (Anthony Carrigan) and Copperhead (Lesley-Ann Brandt) are both interesting characters who have made the most of their limited screen time.

Will we get more of their backstories?

And then there’s the face that everyone’s been waiting for. Showrunner Bruno Heller is still cagey about confirming that Cameron Monaghan’s Jerome is actually the Joker, but he did tell ComicBook.com, “The beginning of Season 2 is the very earliest origins of how the Joker came to be.” That probably means his story is tied in with the Galavans.

In this second teaser, “The Cave,” we get a taste of what lies beneath Thomas Wayne’s study. There’s a glimpse of the door…

… a keypad, Bruce saying, “You can’t have the truth unless you feel a true calling,” — which feels like another clue left by his father — and the screeching of bats.

We still have yet to see Amygdala and Silver St. Cloud, two comic book villains who have already been announced for Season 2. The Goldbergs star Natalie Alyn Lind will play Silver, described as “an ethereal beauty with the pristine manners of a Gotham debutante.” Niece to the Galavans, she’ll befriend Bruce — and become his new love interest. The role of Amygdala hasn’t been cast yet.

Which villain are you most looking forward to seeing? Do you think the Joker will live up to previous versions of the character?

Season 2 of Gotham premieres Monday, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. on Fox.
