Robert & Michelle King Exiting ‘The Good Wife’ After Season 7, CBS Series Can ‘Absolutely’ Continue
“The Good Wife” creators Robert and Michelle King will leave the hit CBS series after the conclusion of current seventh season, CBS president Glenn Geller announced Tuesday during his executive session at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena, Calif.
“The Kings did say they would not be returning after this year, but we have a deep bench on the show,” Geller said at TCA. Although the show has yet to be renewed for Season 8, a pickup seems likely, given the show’s long-running success. As far as Geller is concerned, the duo’s exit doesn’t spell doom for the legal drama, telling press that “the show can absolutely continue” without the Kings.
“The Good Wife” has already seen its share of high-profile departures; leading man Josh Charles left the show in Season 5, after his character was killed in a shocking courtroom shooting, and Emmy winner Archie Panjabi exited the series at the end of Season 6.
Even with their “Good Wife” departure, the husband and wife producing team aren’t severing ties with CBS: they’re currently at work on political comic-thriller “BrainDead,” which will air 13 episodes in summer 2016.
“BrainDead” follows a young, fresh-faced Hill staffer who gets her first job in Washington, D.C., and discovers two things: The government has stopped working, and alien spawn have come to Earth and eaten the brains of a growing number of congressmen and Hill staffers.
“We wanted to do a show that was a mix of genre-pulp and highbrow politics – ‘The Strain’ crossed with ‘The West Wing,’” the Kings said in a statement when the show was given a straight-to-series order last July. “It seemed like the best way to address the news today – not straight, but as the opening act of a horror movie.”
