Gong Show Taps Mike Myers (?) to Host

ABC on Friday announced that Tommy Maitland will host its upcoming Gong Show revival, but if you Google the “British comedic legend,” you’re likely to come up with more questions than answers.

That’s probably because (spoiler alert!) Maitland isn’t a real person. He’s, in fact, a fictional character being played by an actor believed to be Mike Myers. Though no one at ABC will confirm the Myers-as-Maitland theory, it’s hard to deny it when you look at the side-by-side photo above.

In a statement released by ABC, Maitland had only this to say about his new gig: “When [executive producer] Will Arnett came to me and asked me to host The Gong Show, I said, ‘I’m honoured at the request, but I’m retired.’ Then he told me how much I was being paid, in U.S. dollars, and I said, ‘I’m still honoured, but no longer retired.'”

(Side note: ABC is really going all-in on this Maitland joke. In addition to giving the “cheeky Brit” a colorful backstory, the network has even gifted him his own Twitter account. It’s not verified… yet.)

The Gong Show premieres Thursday, June 22 at 10/9c. Will you tune in to see if Maitland is, in fact, Myers? Drop a comment with your thoughts below.
