HBO's Sarah Palin-focused campaign movie "Game Change" scored the most TV Golden Globes nominations Thursday with five, followed by four for Showtime's "Homeland," this year's Emmy winner for best drama.
"Big Bang Theory," "Episodes," "Girls," "Modern Family" and "Smash" earned nominations for best TV comedy or musical, while "Breaking Bad," "Boardwalk Empire," "Downton Abbey," "Homeland" and "The Newsroom" scored nods in the drama category.
"Modern Family" and "Homeland" won in the categories last year.
This year's nominees in the main drama and comedy categories were similar to those of the Emmy Awards with some notable exceptions: While both the Emmys and Globes recognized "Big Bang Theory," "Modern Family" and "Girls," the Globes went with "Smash" and "Episodes," skipping Emmy picks "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "30 Rock" and "Veep." Showtime's "Episodes" aired this year after the Emmy eligibility period.
The Globes and Emmys had the same drama nominees, except that the Globes passed over Emmy nominee "Game of Thrones" for another HBO series, "The Newsroom," and also skipped "Mad Men."
The drama decisions are likely to bring head-scratching, but that's often the case with the unpredictable Globes. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which hands out the awards, is often accused of prizing celebrity over quality.
HBO was the most nominated network with 17 nods, followed by Showtime with seven. ABC followed with seven.
Among first-season shows, HBO's "Girls" and "The Newsroom" and ABC's "Nashville" seemed to impress voters the most. All scored two nominations each.
Besides the best drama nomination, "The Newsroom" earned a best dramatic actor notice for Jeff Daniels. "Girls" also scored a lead comedic actress nomination for star and creator Lena Dunham, as well as the best comedy nod.
"Nashville," meanwhile, scored nominations for lead actress Connie Britton and supporting actress Hayden Panettiere.
