Not surprisingly, some of the best moments in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life revolve around the damaged mother/daughter relationship between Kelly Bishop‘s Emily and Lauren Graham’s Lorelai. And Bishop is giving credit where credit is due for those riotous, heartbreaking sequences.

“If you don’t have good material, you don’t have good television — period,” the veteran actress told me Friday night at the premiere screening/party for the four-installment revival (which begins streaming this Friday). “And we had really good material.”

It also helps that “I love working with Lauren,” Bishop gushes. “We really get each other as actors and we’re really fond of each other as people, so it’s always a joy. I was looking at the scripts and as long as I was working with Lauren I was in good shape… I love her so much as an actress and I love her so much as a person. I would jump into any scene with her because I know I’m going to get as good as I give.”

Also in the above on-camera Q&A, Bishop echoed my sentiment that A Year in the Life serves as a beautiful tribute to her late TV hubby Edward Hermann. “I told his wife [Star], ‘It’s going to break your heart, because Ed is as much a presence in these shows as if he were here.'”
