'Game of Thrones' recap: A sad death with a terrifying consequence

It was White Walker killin’ time on the penultimate episode of this season’s Game of Thrones. But before Jon Snow and the gang found any dead people, they found a dead bear! And Thoros, the red priest who kept bringing Beric Dondarrion back to life, was on the menu for the blue-eyed killing machine.

Although that wasn’t the most terrifying thing to happen in the episode. The guys found themselves stuck on a rock in the middle of a frozen lake, surrounded by dead people. And just when it looked like Jon Snow was doomed again, he was saved at the last second — again! Daenerys came flying in with her dragons, torching the dead around them. Drogon landed on the rock and protected the guys, while the other two dragons circled around, raining down fire on White Walkers.

Ice beats fire … this time

Unfortunately, the Night King wasn’t afraid of dragons and launched an ice spear right into one of them, sending it crashing into the frozen lake. Just like that, we’re down to only two dragons. And to make matters worse, Jon Snow got tackled into the water and Daenerys and the rest of the guys had to fly off without him. Luckily, he survived, because he’s Jon Snow. Plus, he had some help from Uncle Benjen, who rode in to save the day one last time. Benjen gave Jon his horse, and then stayed to fight all the dead — a fight he quickly lost.

Jon finally made it back to the Wall and woke up to Daenerys sitting by his side. She promised to fight the Night King alongside Jon, and then the two shared a moment as he held her hand. But their forbidden love would have to wait, because the most terrifying part of the episode was at the end. The Night King dragged the dead dragon out of the water, and, with a simple touch, gave everyone nightmares by bringing the dragon, partially, back to life.

Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.
