‘Game of Thrones’ Predictions: Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Thrives in Sunday’s Finale

A lot has happened on “Game of Thrones” this season, and given the show’s track record, the final episode is bound to be explosive. Named for the next book in George R.R. Martin‘s series, “The Winds of Winter,” we’re expecting to see Cersei face trial, Davos confront Melisandre, and possibly the biggest fan theory of them all finally confirmed. Let’s go through every major plotline and predict the likeliness of certain outcomes.

(WARNING: DEFINITE SPOILERS AHEAD.)

Tommen Dies — 100 percent

The death of Cersei’s final child is all but inevitable. Cersei was told through a prophecy that she would gain power but watch her children die, and every plan she has made this season has backfired miserably. Her final plan to escape her trial should be no different, and this time the price will be steeper than ever before.

King’s Landing burns to the ground — 70 percent

It’s been hinted at several times that Cersei’s final plan is to use Aerys’ wildfire cache to burn down the Great Sept. Of course, wildfire isn’t something you can just easily control. If showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are looking to top themselves with an explosive finale, completely nuking the capital of Westeros would certainly be a good way to do it, particularly as the White Walkers continue to advance.

Margaery Dies — 45 percent

Now here’s where things get more interesting. If there’s indeed a wildfire explosion coming our way, lots of characters are going to get caught in the blaze. It wouldn’t be surprising if Margaery were one of them, locking the Tyrells and Lannisters in eternal strife for good. It would be a shame though; while the other women this season have gained power through fire and blood, Margaery is the only one who has gained it through nonviolent cunning and eloquence. It’s been fun watching her work her magic this year.

The Mountain Dies — 40 percent

The monster formerly known as Gregor Clegane will doubtless have a big part to play in Cersei’s plans — and possibly her escape from the wildfire. Either he will sacrifice himself to make sure she gets out of King’s Landing safely, or he will become Cersei’s only remaining supporter after this plan makes her public enemy No. 1 in Westeros. We’re going with a lower percentage here, chiefly because we want to see the CleganeBowl as much as you do.

Davos will make an uneasy peace with Melisandre — 85 percent

The time has come for Melisandre to be held accountable for sacrificing a little girl in the name of her god. Davos will rake her over the coals and force her to confess to Jon, but when all is said and done, she won’t be punished with death. Melisandre is still too much of an asset to the Starks for her to be dispatched; and while Jon will be dismayed to hear the truth, he’s not going to kill the woman who resurrected him. We will likely see more tense moments between Davos and the Red Woman next season.

Littlefinger will become Sansa’s next big foe — 65 percent

A debt to Petyr Baelish is often dearly paid. Sansa promised to reward Littlefinger for his aid in the Battle of the Bastards, and there’s likely only one thing he wants: her hand in marriage. The price Sansa may have to pay for taking back Winterfell is to get married for a third time, a bitter pill she may be willing to swallow for the sake of uniting the North to face the White Walkers. But given the darker side Sansa has discovered, she may just seek to fight back against Littlefinger.

Jon Snow becomes the new King In The North — 95 percent

He may do foolish things, but Jon is still loved by many people in the Night’s Watch and the Free Folk. There’s no reason for anyone in the North to continue kneeling to Tommen or the Lannisters, so they will most likely make Jon reluctantly become the next Robb Stark. Defeating Ramsay might have been the easy part.

Arya will kill Walder Frey — 85 percent

There is absolutely no reason for Walder Frey to return to “Game of Thrones” other than to pay for what he did at the Red Wedding. He has to die in this season finale, the only question is how. Our bet is that it will come at the hands of a stronger, more capable Arya, who was there when Frey killed her mother and brother. The only thing that might thwart that outcome is Arya encountering someone else upon her return to Westeros, like the man she left for dead — Sandor Clegane.

Varys makes a deal — 30 percent

Varys left Meereen to get Daenerys more supporters. The first place he might go is Dorne, as the Martells still hate the Lannisters with every fiber of their being. The only question is whether there will be any time for this to happen. Even with a 69-minute run time, there are lots of storylines for the show to cover, and a trip back to Dorne is low on the priority list.

Daenerys will finally leave for Westeros — 90 percent

This has to happen, right? Maybe it doesn’t, because Daenerys and Tyrion are waiting for Varys to come back with more forces, but other than that, there’s nothing keeping them from returning to Westeros to take the Iron Throne. She has the Dragons, she has the Dothraki and she has the slavers cowed into submission. Let’s go already.

Sandor Clegane encounters Brienne — 33 percent

Much like Varys’ storyline, we may not see the Hound again in the finale simply due to time constraints. Still, when last we saw Brienne, she was leaving Riverrun and returning North, which is where the Brotherhood is also heading. It would be very interesting to see Sandor reunite with the woman who nearly killed him and discover they share a common goal.

The White Walkers destroy The Wall — 10 percent

We might see the Night’s King make another charge south just as a reminder of the strength of his forces, but it’s unlikely that we will see them attack The Wall just yet. If the Walkers make it that far that quickly, the plot will have to be sped up to show the rest of the cast uniting to counter them. Benioff and Weiss will probably stick to the King’s Landing storyline to give us a jaw-dropper.

Bran discovers that Jon is a Targaryen — 50 percent

Or they could use THIS as a jaw-dropper instead. Fans have talked for years now about the possibility of Jon being the son of Rhaegar Targaryen instead of Ned Stark. Bran saw a vision earlier in the season at the tower where Jon was born, and he’s supposed to make another appearance soon. This long-awaited twist could be the parting shot “Game of Thrones” leaves us with until next year.
