'Game of Thrones' Season Finale Mini Recap: Death, Death, Shocking Death

Warning: The recap for the “Mother’s Mercy” episode of Game of Thrones contains storyline and character spoilers.

The phrase “Game of Thrones finale” is synonymous with “widespread death,” so none of us should have been too surprised about the shocking deaths in this week’s season-ending episode. Yet here we are: DEVASTATED. If we are to accept his lifeless, glassy eyes in the final scene at face value, Jon Snow has been stabbed to death by his compatriots at Castle Black. Yep, the Stark curse continues. (Unless, of course, Melisandre has something up her burgundy bell sleeve…)

The season-ending death toll didn’t end there. Stannis Baratheon’s army was soundly defeated by Roose Bolton’s, and Stannis himself was executed by no less than Brienne of Tarth! That’ll teach him to commit fratricide via Shadow Baby. The Lannisters also lost a family member, as Myrcella was poisoned by Ellaria Sand while sailing home. A loathsome, cheap shot if there ever was one.

In addition to these outright murders, general bad times abounded elsewhere. Arya murdered Ser Meryn Trant (which was admittedly very satisfying) only to have Jaqen turn her blind as punishment. Cersei was able to confess her way back into the Red Keep, but only after having her hair razor’d off and being forced to walk naked through unruly throngs who greeted her with invective (and sewage).

And Dany’s now lost in the wilderness with Drogon, who refuses to return her to Meereen (understandable!), but now she’s been captured by hundreds of (Dothraki?) hunks on horseback. That last one may not be a bad thing, depends on whether the hunks are jerks or not.

But “Mother’s Mercy” contained more than few pleasant turns as well. First, Reek helped Sansa escape Winterfell by pushing Myranda off a ledge! Then Varys and Tyrion were finally reunited. And best of all, Cersei’s resident mad scientist successfully unveiled his giant, undead Frankenstein’s monster who appears set on vanquishing her enemies. If that’s not reason enough to look forward to Season 6, then what is?
