Game Of Thrones: Is This What Really Happened To Hodor?

Let’s be honest, for the most part Game Of Thrones is one big mystery that loves nothing more than throwing huge, unexpected curveballs at its viewers.

As a result, much of the Internet is dominated with fan theories about every aspect of the much-loved fantasy drama, and whilst a lot of these theories make little to no sense at all, sometimes one comes along and everything suddenly falls into place.

Warning: If you’ve not watched the latest episode of the show, you may want to stop reading.

On Monday night’s episode of Thrones we warmly welcomed back Bran Stark, who was missing for the entire last season.

During a flashback, Bran saw a young Hodor - but he wasn’t exactly Hodor, he was a stable boy called Wylis and, you’ve guessed it, he could talk.

Obviously this means that something tragic happened to the lovable giant over the years and when Bran confronted him about his past you could see the pain in his eyes as he desperately tried to communicate with the youngest Stark boy but failed miserably.

However, the flashback has added fuel to an increasingly popular theory about Hodor that suggests that he used to also have the ability to warg into other people’s conciousnessess, just like Bran can do now.

Reddit user Gbinasia explained that as a stable boy it is likely that a young Wylis chose to warg into a horse: “And if the (possibly) only girl treating him nicely was Lyanna, it would make complete sense that this is the horse he would warg into.

"White is a symbol of purity, innocence, and Wyllis/Hodor is all that. He could warg into that horse so that he gets pet, brushed and generally receive attention no girls would give him.

"Since Rhaegar and Lyanna would eventually run away from everyone, it also makes sense that they would both be on horses while doing so and Wyllis/Hodor would have been witness to many events of that storyline.

"So why would Hodor lose his speaking abilities? My guess is that the horse was slain during battle while Hodor was warging into it, which would explain why he is a very much a simpleton now and is afraid of fighting and lightning.”

Horses are scared of lightning and are also known for carrying people around on their backs, just like Hodor.

It has also been mentioned previously that if somebody wargs into an animal for too long then they risk “losing what makes them human”, which supports the theory and explains why Hodor is so much simpler now than he was as a boy.

Whatever Hodor’s story is, we can’t wait to find out.
