'Game of Thrones': Even George R.R. Martin Doesn't Want to Talk About Sansa's Wedding Night

Sansa Stark’s new storyline has been a steady source of controversy throughout this season of Game of Thrones, as the show’s writers have decisively moved her off the path delineated by Westeros mastermind George R.R. Martin in his Song of Ice and Fire book series. Sunday night’s episode only fanned the flames further, as Sansa reluctantly tied the knot with Ramsay Bolton and was immediately introduced to her new husband’s less-than-noble side. While turncoat Theon Greyjoy watched, Ramsay took his bride by force, in an intense, hard-to-watch scene that inspired an equally intense reaction on Twitter.

One person who declined to share his thoughts (at least publicly) about what happened to Sansa is Martin himself, who posted a firmly worded non-response on his blog. “I have a lot of fans asking me for comment. Let me reiterate what I have said before,” the 66-year-old author wrote. “The show is the show, the books are the books; two different tellings of the same story.”

For those eager to discuss Sansa’s post-wedding plight (Brienne and Podrick can’t come to Winterfell fast enough, if you ask us), Martin — who closed the comments section on his own postb — directs them to other outlets, including fan sites like WinterIsComing.net and episodic reviews written by critics like The Huffington Post’s Mo Ryan. “David and Dan and Bryan and HBO are trying to make the best television series that they can. And over here I am trying to write the best novels that I can. And yes, more and more, they differ. Two roads diverging in the dark of the woods, I suppose… but all of us are still intending that at the end we will arrive at the same place.” For Sansa’s sake, let’s hope that place is a somewhat happy one.

Game of Thones airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO
