‘Full Frontal’ Shows the Hilariously Boring Side of the Civil Rights Movement

In honor of Black History Month, Full Frontal With Samantha Bee highlighted the struggle of those who did much of the work during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. The show interviewed Nell Braxton Gibson, Dorie Ladner, Frank Smith Jr., Luvaughn Brown, and Joan Trumpauer Mulholland. Many of them fondly recalled long hours doing mundane (if not boring) work. Ladner said, “You just don’t all of a sudden have a mass of people without doing groundwork.”

Others recalled endlessly making signs, poring over paperwork, typing, registering voters, and even recruiting hairdressers. One would think that the March on Washington would have been equally laborious, but they described it as their time to let loose and escape segregated areas.

Joan Trumpauer Mulholland gave this sage advice for those working for the pursuit of equality: “Sometimes you have to put your cellphone down and take to the streets.”

Full Frontal airs Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. on TBS.
