‘Friends’ Star Lisa Kudrow Literally Smells Smelly Cats

On the evening of Nov. 2, 1995, America watched Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow) take the stage at Central Perk and perform a song that would haunt Kudrow for years to come: “Smelly Cat.” It was only the second season of Friends, and there’s no way the actress could have known at the time the impact that song would have on her life. While out promoting her new film, Table 19, Kudrow was asked to literally smell cats on Watch What Happens Live.

Host Andy Cohen had his bartender (yes, the show has a bar and bartender), who wore a cat costume, bring out a basket filled with cats. The weren’t smelly, exactly, but they were fragrant with aromas of lemon, lavender, and orange. Kudrow and the show’s other guest, Jennifer Beals, were asked to smell the cats and guess what they were scented with. As ludicrous as the game was, it was for a good cause. Each cat is up for adoption.
