First ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Trailer: You Might Not Have Expected The Spanish Inquisition

Like a thief in the night comes the first trailer for Assassin’s Creed, the start of what could end up being a film franchise based on Ubisoft’s long-running hit series of video games. Like the games on which it’s based, the film follows a man who through the use of futuristic technology is able to experience the memories of his ancestors and subsequently absord their skills. Like The Matrix meets Cloud Atlas. The hook is that said ancestors are members of the legendary Assassins – the same people who terrorized the levant until they were wiped out by the Mongols in the 13th century. Have a look at what that’s like below.

Given that it’s being produced in part by Ubisoft Films, it makes sense that this thing is aesthetically very, very close to the games on which its based. Whether that translates to good cinema will have to wait for when it hits theaters December 21. It does at least go to places the games never have, in this case the Spanish Inquisition. Or more accurately, a much more ninja-ful version of that chapter of European history anyway.

Starring Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Michael K. Williams, Ariane Labed, Jeremy Irons, and Brendan Gleeson, the 20th Century Fox film is directed Justin Kurzel from a script by Bill Collage, Adam Cooper, Scott Frank, and Michael Lesslie.
