Extreme Skier's Ultra Extreme Ride

On Sunday’s 60 Minutes, Anderson Cooper followed extreme skier J.T. Holmes as he rode one of the most infamous mountains in Swiss Alps, known as the Eiger. His descent down the nearly impossible run was a hat trick of dangerous sports. First, J.T. had to travel from the summit using a combination of skiing and paragliding known as speedriding. JT then would detach the wing and ski down the monstrous mountain toward a cliff. As if that wasn’t enough, J.T. would then base jump from the sheer cliff face, free falling for twenty seconds before pulling his parachute. Luckily, his first attempt was flawless. J.T. then went for a second round but his ski nearly stuck during his base jump. Had he not been able to disconnect his ski, he would have surely died.

In case you’re thinking that J.T. Holmes is insane, he assures that he’s more of a methodical extreme athlete. “There’s two mindsets… there’s the Evel Knievel, which is kind of kamikaze, and, ‘Who knows how it’s going to work out?’” He explained, “And then there’s the James Bond. And Bond is composed and dialed. And he uses clever pieces of gear which he developed with Q to, you know, outwit his opponents and pull off tremendous things.” He added, “I’m Bond.”

60 Minutes airs Sundays at 7 pm on CBS.
