Grease: Live's Thomas Kail and Alex Rudzinski won the Emmy for best directing for a variety special on Sunday night.

The show beat out NBC's Adele Live In New York City, directed by Beth McCarthy-Miller; HBO's Amy Schumer: Live at the Apollo , directed by Chris Rock; CBS' 58th Grammy Awards, directed by Louis J. Horvitz; CBS' The Kennedy Center Honors, directed by Glenn Weiss; and HBO's Lemonade, directed by Kahlil Joseph and Beyonce. Laverne Cox handed out the award.

Kail spoke of his affection for the original film backstage, saying it was the only movie that he, his younger sister and his older sister could all agree on during their childhood. It's "part of my molecules," he said. "The show that we made is full of our affection for it."

As a Grease fan, Kail was eager to weigh in on the internet theory that has sparked much debate in recent weeks, specifically that the Sandy character drowns at the beach at the beginning of the film and that the end sequence where she and Danny drive into the clouds is Sandy ascending to heaven.

"I'd like to address the internet right now: She was alive. She was very, very alive. Her name was Julianne Hough," Kail said with a laugh. "I will go on record saying I love the internet."

The Emmy win puts Kail halfway to an EGOT after his Tony win in June for Broadway smash Hamilton. "I'm going to do a spoken-word comedy album for the Grammy," Kail joked. "I think I probably have my best chance for an Oscar in sound mixing, so I'm going to try and join the union in the next six months."

Jimmy Kimmel hosted the 2016 Primetime Emmy Awards, which aired live on ABC from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
