‘Emerald City’ Sneak Peek: Explore a ‘Raw and Dangerous’ Version of Oz

This is Oz as you’ve never seen it before.

NBC’s new drama Emerald City takes the familiar story by L. Frank Baum — most famously told on film in 1939’s The Wizard of Oz — and puts a gritty, fantastical spin on it. In this exclusive first look at the series, which premieres Jan. 6, the stars pull back the curtain to an eye-popping, sweepingly epic world.

“This is going to be a hell of a show,” promises Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays the Wizard.

In this Oz, the Wizard has banned magic, and rules over the realm with science. The witches — Joely Richardson’s Glinda andAna Ularu’s West — have taken on other roles. But the fragile truce threatens to implode with the arrival of Dorothy Gale (Adria Arjona). All the familiar aspects of the story come with twists — for instance, the yellow brick road is now a path covered with hallucinogenic poppy dust and the Munchkins are now tribal warriors.

As Oliver Jackson-Cohen, who plays Lucas (a version of the Scarecrow), says, this Oz is “beautiful, but also raw and dangerous.”

Emerald City premieres Friday, Jan. 6, at 9 p.m. on NBC.
