Ellen DeGeneres voices her support for #MeToo sexual harassment campaign

Ellen DeGeneres took time out of her show on Thursday to voice her support for the “Me Too” movement that has been growing online. In response to the recent allegations of sexual assault and harassment by powerful men, actress Alyssa Milano asked women to share their stories on social media using #MeToo, and millions of women have come forward, including DeGeneres.

DeGeneres said, “I think it’s brave and important to speak out and not be shamed by anyone. It is not always easy, but we have to do that. That’s why I posted and I will say right now out loud, me too.”

With so many people coming forward with painful accounts, DeGeneres offered some helpful tips. She said, “It’s hard to know which is the right response. Is it a crying face emoji because I’m sad that that happened to you? Or is it a smiley face to say good for you for speaking out? I’m not sure about the etiquette, but I do know that hell hath no fury like a woman with a Twitter account.”

DeGeneres said that she hopes the online posts lead to conversations in real life, but she jokingly pointed out that there might be an adjustment period. “So you have to be careful about what you tweet because if you see a tweet that says, ‘I can’t wait to see the new “Star Wars” movie’ and you respond, ‘Me too,’ it means something completely different now.”
