Eddie Izzard Fought Back Tears While Recounting Mother’s Death

Comedian Eddie Izzard visited The View and fought back tears when he discussed the death of his mother when he was a child. Izzard, who wrote about his mother in his new book, Believe Me: A Memoir of Love, Death, and Jazz Chickens, said that when he was 6 years old, his mother died of cancer. He explained that she was ill for some time, but being a child, he assumed his mother would get better.

Izzard shared, “And one day we came home — and it’s the first chapter of the book, and I’m not going to read it out — but we came home and she wasn’t there, and we never saw her again.”

He fought back tears and shared more about the effect his mother’s death had on him. He said, “For me and my brother, it blew us away. But I think I became a performer because mom died. I think that’s how I interpreted it.”
