‘Dunkirk’ Logs Strong 3-Day Cume Of $21.2M After Key Market Rollout – Int’l Box Office
2ND UPDATE, Saturday, 8 AM: Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk has now rolled out to its 46 markets and so far raked in a nice $21.2 million in three days of release (including previews). On Friday, it grabbed $12.7M alone from its now 10,750 locales. The film first opened in French-speaking countries, taking in a big $2.2M in its first day in France. And France continues to play well.
In key new territory openings, the UK debuted very strong with an estimated first day of $3.7M on 1,313 screens to take a 56% share of the Top 5 films — that doubles the opening-day grosses for both Gravity and Interstellar. Imax has three screens there playing the 70mm version of the sweeping WWII drama.
Spain opened to an excellent $602K on 401 screens for the No. 1 spot and a 41% share of the Top 5 films in the market, up 45% over the opening numbers of Gravity.
Dunkirk has also dropped now into 10 Asian markets and has dominated the territories with $3.7M yesterday and a two-day cume of $6.3M. In Korea, where Warner Bros re-released Nolan’s 2008 film Dark Knight last weekend to generate excitement for another Nolan film coming into the marketplace, it took the No. 1 spot and had a big 54% share of the Top 5 films in the market. From 1,252 screens, it took in $1.9M yesterday for a running cume of $3.6M so far.
Australia added $978K from its 535 screens, maintaining the No. 1 ranking with a 51% share of the Top 5. The 2-day cume is now A$1.9M. Dunkirk is also No. 1 in Russia, having grossed $574K yesterday for a total cume so far of $1.2M.
And finally, France brought in another $734,000 for the day with 100K admissions on 668 screens, ranking No. 1 and bringing the cume to $2.6M.
UPDATE, Friday, 10:40 AM: Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk just posted another $6.3M in its seven markets (which opened yesterday) to bring its running two-day total up to $8.6M. Domestically, it grabbed a big $5.5M last night in previews so before it goes wide tonight, the critically acclaimed film has taken in $14.1M worldwide.
The WWII drama was released in seven Asian markets yesterday and rallied $2.6M, collectively outgrossing Inception by 24%, Gravity by 34% and more than tripling American Sniper in those markets.
Korea, in particular — where Warner Bros. re-released director Nolan’s 2008 Batman film The Dark Knight last weekend to fan anticipation for his new film — took 59% of the Top 5 films in the marketplace, with a stellar $1.6M from 1,252 screens. Opening day results topped all comps including Gravity and American Sniper and came in on par with Interstellar.
Australia opened to a strong $938K on 535 screens (which included Wednesday night sneaks) to rank No. 1 and taking a 54% share of the Top 5 films. Excluding sneaks, these results are +45% ahead of Gravity, +33% ahead of Interstellar and on par with American Sniper. One of the theaters there is showing it in the intended 70mm format.
In Russia, Dunkirk opened to $641K on 2,119 screens for No. 1 and a 42% share of the Top 5 films. Opening day results are, once again, ahead of Gravity (+6%).
Finally, Holland generated a nice $305K on 132 screens and also ranked No. 1 with a 43% share of the Top 5 films in the market. Results are higher than all comps and comes in as the 2nd highest opening day for a Christopher Nolan film, only behind Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, which bowed during the same time period five years ago.
In its second day, France continues its excellent run, pulling in another $756K for the day with 101K admissions on 668 screens. So the two-day cume in the territory is $1.8M so far.
Dunkirk will open in 15 more markets today, including Spain and UK, on its way to 46 territories, 42 of them boasting Imax screenings.
PREVIOUS, Thursday, 10:26 AM: Christopher Nolan’s sweeping WWII epic Dunkirk began its international rollout in France and other French-speaking markets today to gross $2.2M (that includes previews). The film is in only seven markets at the moment and landed No. 1 in each.
France launched to an impressive $1.1M with 143K admissions on 668 screens, which outperformed the opening day gross for Nolan’s 2014 sci-fi pic Interstellar by a big 68%. It was also on par with the results from Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper.
The Warner Bros.’ film chronicles the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force and Allied troops from the French seaport of Dunkerque as they battled the Nazis, will open in 46 international markets this weekend. Russia, Korea and Australia is part of the mix of 24 territories which will open today and then it heads into other key markets such as the U.K. and Spain on Friday.
Nolan actually shot the film in Dunkerque where all the action took place 77 years ago. Last weekend, Warner Bros. premiered the film to audiences there — some of the locals were extras in the film — and it was so well received that the studio added an extra public screening on Monday to accommodate the enthusiasm.
Opening on a non-traditional Wednesday, Scandinavian markets garnered a solid $656K for the region, with Sweden commanding a 53% share of the total market, Norway at 52% and Finland at 40%.
The film should also resonant well with European audiences — boy band heartthrob Harry Styles from One Direction is in the film and is a favorite in the U.K. Dunkirk is receiving critical kudos North America as well where it opens tonight in previews before marching into the weekend with the widest 70mm release to hit theaters in about 25 years. The international push includes about 9,900 screens which includes 234 Imax locations in 42 of those markets. Six markets are running the film in 70mm, including three in the U.K., and one each in Australia, Thailand and the Czech Republic.
Dunkirk will open in the Latin American markets including the big territories of Mexico and Brazil next weekend. Italy will then go on Aug. 31 and China on Sept. 1 followed by Japan on Sept. 9.
The film also stars Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Fionn Whitehead, Damien Bonnard, Aneurin Barnard, Tom Glynn-Carney, Barry Keoghan, Jack Lowden, James Bloor, James D’Arcy and Kenneth Branagh.
