Donald Trump Reverses Himself, Says President Obama Was Born in the U.S.

The Hollywood Reporter

Donald Trump in perhaps his shortest presser ever, on Friday said he now believes President Obama was born in the United States. He made that remark after 30 minutes of multiple Medal of Honor recipients and other veterans talking him up. The presser was carried on major news networks.

Before the "major" announcement got underway, Trump commented on how beautiful his D.C. hotel was where the presser was being held.

A number reporters shared their amazement on social media that they bought into what Trump promised to be a "major" announcement.

In his short remarks, Trump said it was actually Hillary Clinton who started the birther movement back in 2008 when she ran against Obama in the primaries. "I finished [the controversy]," Trump claimed.

"President Barrack Obama was born in the United States. Period," Trump said. That was it.

Previously, for years, the GOP presidential candidate was one of the most well-known individuals pushing the "birther movement," claiming Obama is ineligible to be president because he was allegedly born outside of the country. Trump and others pushed the conspiracy so hard, the White House finally released the president's birth certificate, proving he was in fact born in America.

Clinton, in a fury of tweets, responded to Trump's remark that is was she who began the birther movement, saying in part, "What Trump just did is a disgrace."

Trump has spent years peddling a racist conspiracy aimed at undermining the first African American president. He can't just take it back.

The birther lie is what turned Trump from an ordinary reality TV star into a political figure. That origin story can't be unwritten.

Trump's birtherism stems from the same innate beliefs that led to discriminating against black tenants early in his career. Can't be undone.

What Trump should do: for once in his life, own up to his mistakes. Apologize to the President, and to the American people.
