Derek Hough Releases Statement on 'DWTS' Injury: Will He Dance Next Week?

Derek Hough has been doing double duty during this season’s Dancing With the Stars, with a bicoastal work schedule that has him flying back and forth to New York to rehearse for the New York Spring Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall and to Los Angeles for the DWTS live shows. But now, the five-time mirrorball champion has been sidelined — and he’ll stay parked in L.A. for the week, at least.

In an official statement released by Hough’s rep, it was confirmed that the 29-year-old pro dancer was injured Monday night while rehearsing for the upcoming 10th Anniversary Dancing With the Stars TV special. Hough “suffered injuries to his right foot and left ankle, and he has been diagnosed with a broken toe on his right foot, sprains to his left ankle on both the inside and outside aspects, and a bone bruise on the same ankle.”

According to the official statement: “Derek will remain in Los Angeles this week to rehab his injuries and his understudy will be filling in for him for New York Spring Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall in New York. While it remains unclear at this time if Derek will be able to perform on the Monday April 27 episode of Dancing With the Stars, his partner Nastia Liukin will train in Los Angeles this week with pro-dancer Sasha Farber to prepare for the Live show.”

Hough also posted a pic of his injured foot to Instagram, explaining that his dual rehearsals for DWTS and Radio City Music Hall had him feeling “more healthy, strong and fit” than ever. “But then a fluke accident happened that involved a light and some stairs,” he wrote. “Can’t believe it, wish I had a cooler story to tell.” Hough admitted that while he’s usually able to work though injury, this one literally floored him. “I’m determined to come back all guns blazing… soon!!!” he wrote.

While Hough’s future on the 20th season of Dancing With the Stars is uncertain, Farber will fill his dancing shoes for now, and his role in the Spring Spectacular will be played by Taylor Frey. Hough posted a video to Twitter to encourage his fans to still go to the NYC show.

Dancing With the Stars airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
