Denzel Washington’s Dramatic Television Directorial Debut on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

Oscar winner Denzel Washington made his television directorial debut in the Grey’s Anatomy episode “The Sound of Silence.” Denzel, who directed the feature films Antwone Fisher and The Great Debaters, brought a lot of drama to this episode.

In the first half, Denzel told the story through the viewpoint of Dr. Meredith Grey, who was violently attacked by a temporarily crazed patient and lost his hearing. Denzel used silent scenes to convey his experience and illustrated the time lapse of days spent in the hospital by focusing on the character’s morphine drip.

The episode ended with a heartfelt moment shared between Meredith and the patient who attacked him — leaving us with the message of forgiveness.

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
