Demi Lovato Addresses Past Addiction, Says She's 'Grateful to Be in Recovery'

Demi Lovato is opening up about her recovery from addiction to raise awareness of "the biggest problem in our country."

The 23-year-old "Cool for the Summer" singer took to Instagram on Tuesday to share a short video, created by the nonprofit organization Facing Addiction, asking fans to "look closer" at the prevalence of addiction in America.

"I am one of the 1 in 7 people who has faced addiction, and I am grateful to be in recovery today," wrote Lovato, who has admitted to abusing drugs in the past and entered rehab when she was 18 to receive treatment for an eating disorder and self-harm.

"It's time for us all to reflect, and start @facingaddiction. Let's stop ignoring the biggest problem in our country we often don't want to look at," Lovato continued. "We all are connected to this issue one way or another and we all need to be part of the solution. Together we can replace shame with support, hope, and healing."

Lovato is one of a number of celebrities working with Facing Addiction to raise awareness of the high rates of addiction in the country. Model Tara Conner and comedian Gary Owen have also shared the short Instagram video, along with stories of their own addiction struggles.

Lovato has frequently credited her longtime boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama with helping her stay sober and maintain her healthy recovery, and has said she "really wouldn't be alive today without him." Check out the video below for more on the cute couple's powerful support system.
