David Letterman Investigates Solar Energy in India

On the season premiere of Years of Living Dangerously, we found out what David Letterman has been doing during his retirement. He traveled to India to experience the huge growth of solar power currently occurring there. Letterman was less the dry-witted comedian American audiences had come to know than he was a thoughtful observer.

Letterman explained that India will soon be the most populous country and will have electricity demands that rival the United States and China. To meet the growing demand, the Indian government has heavily invested in solar power.

The former Late Show host visited rural areas that have been able to reduce their dependence on toxic kerosene lamps because of local solar farms. India’s Minister of Energy even showed Letterman a large-scale solar farm that will make an impact on India’s carbon emissions.

He also met with Prime Minister Modi to discuss the leader’s motivation for using clean energy. Letterman was also critical of the Indian government’s expanded reliance on coal.

The episode ended with Letterman showing the solar farm that he has installed to power his own home.

Years of Living Dangerously airs Sunday nights at 8 p.m. ET on National Geographic.
