'Dancing With the Stars' Rehearsals Exclusive: Nyle DiMarco and Peta Murgatroyd Go Pro

Peta Murgatroyd may be a teacher on Dancing With the Stars, but this season she’s a student, too. The pro dancer and former mirrorball champ has to learn how to communicate with her new partner, deaf actor and model Nyle DiMarco, with the help of his translator.

In this exclusive behind-the-scenes peek at Nyle and Peta’s first rehearsal, we get an insider’s view at Nyle and his translator, Ramon, teaching Peta some sign language basics. We even get a GoPro view, courtesy of the action cameras attached to the dancing duo.

Peta says with Ramon in the room she has to learn to dance as “almost a threesome,” but she makes one thing clear to Nyle: It’s just the two of them on the dance floor.

“Communication is a huge, huge part of this whole competition,” she says. “It’s only us speaking, only us moving together as one. We’ve got to make sure we have that down.”

And so far their communication system is working. Nyle and Peta tied for first place on the judges’ leaderboard on last week’s Dancing With the Stars premiere. Based on their performance (and their amazing chemistry!), there’s definitely no lack of communication here.

Dancing With the Stars air Mondays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
