'Dancing With the Stars' Week 6: Who got two thumbs up on movie night?
SPOILER ALERT: This recap of Week 6 of Dancing With the Stars contains spoilers.
The ballroom met the box office this week on Dancing With the Stars, as ABC’s celebrity dancing competition rolled out the red carpet for a “A Night at the Movies,” one of its most popular themes. Why is it so great, you ask? Because you haven’t lived until you’ve seen a 40-year-old boy-bander perform a western-themed samba to a Will Smith song.
The movie menagerie featured dances depicting every genre imaginable — all that was missing was “horror,” but we’ll save that for next week’s Halloween extravaganza. And as a bonus, Shania Twain was in the ballroom. Ahead of her acting debut in the upcoming John Travolta flick Trading Paint, Shania totally counts as a suitable guest judge on this most moviest of nights — and she uses a ton of adjectives in her critiques!
Of course, no movie night would be complete without a box office flop. This week’s dreaded elimination went to Nick Lachey and Peta Murgatroyd. While the judges appreciated Nick’s line dance steps during the couple’s post-apocalyptic western samba, Len Goodman noted that the 98 Degrees alum stiffened up during the samba parts. That doesn’t work when you’re being judged for a samba, but it was the missteps in last week’s Jungle Book themed dance that cost Nick his spot on the show.
“I think I’m most proud of the fact that we laid it all out there every week,” Nick said. “I came here not a very good dancer and I’ll leave here not a very good dancer. But I’m proud of the effort we gave.”
Here’s who topped (and flopped) at the box office on DWTS’ movie night.
Lindsey Stirling and Mark Ballas: 40/40
Movie genre: Sci-fi. Mad scientist Mark cooked up some cray-cray choreography for a robotic Argentine tango with Lindsey, and it was so brilliant that Len blurted out his score (a 10!) before it was time. Shania Twain said she had never seen sharp edges look so elegant, and Bruno Tonioli declared it the best dance of the season.
Jordan Fisher and Lindsay Arnold: 39/40
Movie genre: Drama. After last week’s perfect score, Jordan was under pressure to be perfect once again. Unfortunately, a “contrived” hand movement during his rumba with Lindsay got on Len Goodman’s nerves. “Why did you do that with your hand?” Len asked. “Cut out the twiddly fiddlies!” On the opposite end, Carrie Ann Inaba called the dance a “wave of gorgeousness,” and she wasn’t referring to hands.
Terrell Owens and Cheryl Burke: 37/40
Movie genre: Spy. The NFL star transformed into a “black James Bond,” complete with a twinkle in his eye, for a nearly flawless jive that prompted Len Goodman to crown it his best dance yet. The judges described the dance as “slick” and “oily,” a good thing here, considering Shania slid in a “10” paddle.
Nikki Bella and Artem Chigvintsev: 36/40
Movie genre: Foreign. The WWE superstar and her “Russian therapist” danced a romantic Argentine tango to the song “Dernière Danse,” and nothing was lost in the translation — even when Artem lost his balance a bit. Minor detail here, since it’s the celeb that the judges score, not his or her professional partner. Carrie Ann Inaba told Nikki that with a few more tweaks she’ll look like one of the pros.
Vanessa Lachey and Maksim Chmerkovskiy: 36/40
Movie genre: Musical. Vanessa Lachey lost her skirt halfway through her quickstep with Maks (seriously!), but she didn’t let a little wardrobe malfunction slow her down. Bruno praised the dance as “theatrical, full of pizzazz and glamour — like a ’40s musical.” “You nailed it,” he said. The mom of three joked that she didn’t mean to lose her skirt, but if it would earn her extra points…
Victoria Arlen and Val Chmerkovskiy: 31/40
Movie genre: Sports. Victoria scored with a hockey-themed paso doble to Queen’s “We Will Rock You,” while Val rocked a toothless grin as the duo danced on an ice rink. The judges loved the concept, and Bruno noted that even through all of the stick flicks, he could still see a proper paso. Shania called the dance “very creative,” but she went rogue and gave the lone low score.
Frankie Muniz and Witney Carson: 31/40
Movie genre: Animation. The Malcolm in the Middle star tumbled down the leaderboard this week with a chaotic “Jolly Rock” jazz. Bruno noted that the actor lost timing few times, and Carrie Ann said she couldn’t ignore all of the mishaps in the colorful dance. Sigh. Not even a magic mushroom could take the judges’ minds off the mistakes. On the plus side, Frankie gave us the first worm on the show in years.
Drew Scott and Emma Slater: 30/40
Movie genre: Action. An explosive paso doble loaded with a little bit too much content (is there such a thing?) had the Property Brothers star in a bit of trouble with the judges. Bruno pointed out that the star went wrong during the dance, telling him it looked like he was ripping Emma’s arm off. Len went so far as to call it an “awkward-looking routine.” The “7” paddles came fast and furious, but fellow Canadian Shania had mercy on the star and gave him a “9.”
